Race report
The Windward Challenge certainly did what it said on the tin! It certainly was a challenge with poor & decreasing visibility and a deceptively rough sea causing difficulties for competitors & safety crews alike. The event was attended by 8 entrants including 2 visitors from Berwick & Sunderland, more than last year but still a little disappointing.

Unfortunately the race had to be abandoned due to the decreasing visibility. No overall winner was declared as a result of the abandonment, however at the time the following were in the lead: -

Ron Henderson / Sarah Roberts Dart 16 NSC

Mandy Hindle / Neal Gibson Cherub Sunderland YC

All in all we managed to raise £130 for Newbiggin RNLI (including a donation). They certainly earned it on the day running around & assisting our safety crews. Unfortunately, one unlucky sailor cut her leg during a capsize but, thankfully, she is on the mend with no serious injuries. So thank you to Newbiggin Lifeboat, her crew & shore staff who provide us all with that reassurance that they are always there when we need them.

A special prize went to Emma Carver, our injured sailor, for using the most forms of transport on the day. These were: -

Laser 2000
Orkney Strikeliner
RNLI ILB
NEAS Ambulance
Hospital Trolley!

We don't mean to cause Emma any embarrassment, we all know accidents happen and we’re pleased to find she’s feeling better.

Thank you to all who helped out on the day whether ashore or afloat. Without your efforts these events would not be possible.

Next Open Competition is the NEYTS on 12th July, followed by the Cock O the North Enterprise open on 19th & 20th July.

Please put these dates in your diary now as I will once again be asking for lots of help.
