NEWBIGGIN BY THE SEA SAILING CLUB ACTIVITIES

Sailing is what the club is all about. The club has two sailing areas, the first is the bay at Newbiggin by the Sea which has a shallow sandy beach allowing launching at at low and high tide. The tractor is used to launch and recover the safety boats and will also pull your craft from the beach. Only a short walk along the promenade, the launching area is accessible to all craft. Sailing in the bay and its surrounding expanse of water allows us to have a number of different courses and we run both short and long races depending on the weather conditions. Our Windward Trophy is a long race to the Port of Blyth and back and this provides the sailors with terrific excitement. A short race to the River Wansbeck where the sailors stop for lunch before returning is another good day.

Winter brings to the club the opportunity to sail on the Queen Elizabeth II lake which is set in a country park only a short distance from the club. We also use this as a base for training our cadets when it is too rough to sail on the sea. While it has limited changing facilities the distance back to the clubhouse for a hot shower is not really a problem for our hardy sailors.

The main sailing programme runs from early April through to late October then the lake sailing and the winter series takes over till late December. The club has a long list of trophies to be raced for and the winners get to hold the trophy for a year but also get an engraved memento which the crew and helm keep. Our sailing committee runs the sailing programme to perfection each year and encourages everyone to take part.
