VACANCIES

Newbiggin by the Sea Water Activities Centre (NWAC) is a project set up and run by Newbiggin by the Sea Sailing Club to encourage participation in sailing, kayaking, canoeing and windsurfing. The project aims to remove perceived barriers to involvement in water sports, runs courses and activity days for groups and helps to develop local clubs to encourage regular participation. The project is open to all and has an emphasis on encouraging people to get involved in the activities at every level.

The project is administered by the Water Activities Development Officers (WADOs), Simon Benson and Jessie Gebhard. The team works to develop the opportunities and activities offered through the project.

We have just released our group activity brochure for 2007 which can be downloaded here as a pdf file.

We currently run the following activities:

Sailing
Canoeing and Kayaking
Raft Building
Problem Solving and Team Building

The Project

Newbiggin by the Sea Water Activities Centre, also known as the Try Sailing Project, is an Active England funded project and is supported by many organisations including the National Lottery, Big Lottery Fund, Sport England, Northern Rock, Wansbeck District Council and the Community Foundation.

The project was formed by members of Newbiggin by the Sea Sailing Club and is a part of the club, utilising the facilities and equipment. The project is overseen by a steering group from the sailing club. The project aims to encourage increased participation by encouraging membership of the club and involvement in club activities.

Newbiggin by the Sea Sailing Club is open to all, regardless of age and ability and our cadet section has a warm welcome for youngsters who wish to learn to sail or who are experienced sailors and would like to become involved with an active club. Membership costs are low, and the club organises an extensive training programme for the cadets on Saturday mornings.

In 2007 we are also forming a canoe club which will operate alongside the sailing club and allow people of all ages to access paddling in the local area. The club will operate in a similar manner to the sailing club and will be based at the premises in Newbiggin by the Sea.

We always encourage participants at the activity centre to join the Sailing Club. By joining the club, young people are able to regularly participate in activities as individuals. They can also be involved in volunteering and helping out with the club and the Activity Centre. Our strong and enthusiastic volunteer scheme is a fantastic way to become involved in the project and progress to becoming an instructor in water activities. If you would like more details about our volunteer programme, please get in touch.
