Newbiggin Sailing Club Turns Green

Solar Heating Installed

Newbiggin by the Sea is perhaps the first community and voluntary group in Wansbeck to embrace green technology in its organisation.

During the sailing season the demand for constant hot water for showers is very high and the costs to heat this water puts a strain on the organisations budgets.

With the help from a Sustainable Communities Grant which is administered by Wansbeck District Council the club has now had completed a installation that will heat its water directly from the solar energy that surrounds us all. The panels together with the associated storage and control equipment was installed and is already showing its worth by cutting back the number of times the boiler ignites. Together with the solar hot water heating system rooms previously heated by electric are now benefiting from hot water radiators with further cost benefits.

By regular checking of the gas and electric meters Newbiggin by the Sea Sailing Club is seeing a reduction in the number of energy units it is using.

The club is now looking at ways of financing wind generation to reduce further its consumption of fossil fuels.

Members guests and participants in the sailing clubs active water activity programs will now be able to take a hot shower knowing that they are not increasing their contribution to greenhouse gasses
